Trion Worlds is getting into the digital gaming platform business, as the studio announced today that it will be releasing its own "lightweight digital hub" called Glyph.

Glyph was created to connect developers with audiences, and is purported to be friendly to use from both sides and DRM-free. The platform will take over the responsibility of being the launcher for Trion's titles, including RIFT, Defiance, and Trove (we'll believe ArcheAge when we see it). Trion says that the studio has already handled "more then 10 million gamers" in the past three years and that Glyph will be a great help to pair those players up with current and future titles.

Glyph will also handle games from Trion's partners, as the studio has already begun signing on developers. It will launch shortly after GDC 2014.

Really? Why does Trion feel the need to alienate even more people with another useless 'launcher' that no one wants on their system?

Looks like shit, sorry. I'm sure a graphics designer out there spent days on this and I probably sound like an asshole for saying that.

This is backtracking into PlayNC launcher territory. No reason to have this instead of individual launchers for each game that aren't running autoupdate services in the background. Engineers/programmers probably had a bunch of meetings and spent weeks or months creating this launcher, but it's unnecessary.

Just call Valve and put the games on Steam instead of wasting your time and money on bandwidth and engineering.

AGREED. Trion has never had an original idea. This looks like the unwanted love child of origin and steam interfaces....

Meteor Entertainment learned this lesson the hard way: Hawken was dying from lack of exposure, they eventually gave up on their own launcher (which wasn't that shitty) and moved to Steam. Instant influx of new players.

HiRez Entertainment also learned this. They added Tribes and SMITE to Steam and even though no one at HiRez gives a shit about Tribes anymore (didn't make them enough money, Tencent China has pumped a ton of money into them for SMITE), the game's still got players in the servers every night.

You don't see anyone waxing poetic about NCsoft's PlayNC launcher now, do you? Nope. Trion will just have to learn this the hard way too.

Glyph will be running in tangent with Steam, not competing against it. It is going to mostly be used as a tool for Trion customers to experience other Trion games from what I understand.

Then Trion will have to learn that only because you play one game by a company, you don't automatically like every other game by that company.

That's fine, you can just ignore Glyph. All of the games that go through Glyph will be DRM-free and can be played offline if they're not MMOs.

It's in the article that I linked in my thread in the "New Articles and Guides" section.

So to play Rift or AA you will not have to open the Glyph launcher and select the game ?

This makes no sense...they've already got Rift and Defiance on steam...why are they wasting time with this...

I am not sure about that. But there are advantages to using Glyph, such as tracking Loyalty points which is apparently going to be shared across all games now, which is really cool.

It also seems like it's going to be a community hub of sorts, sort of like Steam's but probably better because Steam's community hubs aren't very good.

It sounds unnecessary. So this is why we probably don't have AA EU/NA they wasting time on this Glyph and Minecraft slightly rounded corners and brighter edition.

Why are they doing this? Like others said, we already have Steam.

It'll help developers get their games noticed by people that Trion thinks would enjoy their game, for one. I'm definitely interested in checking out anything that Trion puts their label on. Also it will allow users to manage their Trion Account from Glyph instead of having to log onto the website, and make in-game purchases from out of game and track Loyalty points.

Yes we know Kriptini, but you are either the biggest fanboy the world has ever seen or a developer/related to one of the developers (lol).

Apparently not judging something before we get to even see it makes me a fanboy. Okay.

I am really beginning to think Kriptini is on Trion's payroll.
