I am beginning to consider a new interim build, some old parts will be retained.

Keeping from the old system;
- G. Skill Ripjawz DDR3 1600 16GB 9-9-9-24-1t
- Storage drives SATA 2, WD HD Black 750GB & 1.5TB
- Kybrd, Monitor, Speakers, Headset
- CoolerMaster 690 case (4y old but still adequate 2x 120mm in, 1x 120mm out, PSU bottom mount) soon to be upgraded I think

New items; (~ $805)
- Motherboard - MSI Z77a GD65
- CPU - Core i7 3770 Ivybridge
- SSD - Crucial M4 128GB MLC
- PSU - Corsair 650W
- Optical Burner - LG Blu-Ray/DVD Burner

Might shift to the 3770K, but I rarely OC. The MB and SSD are a question atm, might be better options.

Will look to a new case and GPU come fall.

Fully agree with the Mobo (MSI is great if you can afford it) and CPU. If you go for an SSD, you currently need to pick the Samsung 830 - anything else is subpar or unreliable (especially Crucial sucks and had dataloss allover recently).

Got any info on your current GPU ? Just curious.

Depending on the mainboard's details you might want to consider a separate intelligent soundcard (Creative Soundblaster Xi-Fi recommended) to save on CPU/disk/RAM demands - sound has a huge impact on performance these days.

Another hint: In fall or even end of this year there's coming up alot of totally new/different technology, so buying now isn't a clever choice.

On board sound is the Realtek ALC898 (8 channel), I currently have 4-5 year old SoundBlaster X-Fi. Reviews give the onboard as as good.

As to GPU, running the gtx560ti.

Yeah I know about the Kepler GPU's we hope to see this fall. As to the SSD I have been seeing good comments about the PCIe SSD's, but in general the prices are through the roof.
But this is why I do incremental, memory and GPU a few months back, so nothing is too big of a touch all at once. The MB/CPU being near state of the art are unlikely to change, or require change, for a couple years. The only reason I am looking to upgrade at all is the lack of support on my older MB for USB/SATA 3.0, and the PSU (500w) being run at the very limits of its ratings. I would have just transferred over my i7 875K over to a newer board, but its socket is no longer supported.

Your suggested setup is fine, I see no flaw there. And don't buy the X-fi soundcard it suxx and its very old by now. It is a card made to accelerate EAX audio effects under windows XP. The sound quality is really not awesome, if the onboard one is not enough, better look for an actually good sound card, and creative does not have these.

If all you need is USB 3.0/S-ATA 3, you might want to just add-in a controller for that and save for a real upgrade much later in the year. Upgrading the PSU sounds wise though, a too weak one could easily damage your PC if running at it's limits since voltages will not be stable.

Oh, and don't forget to look at the Samsung 830 SSD series - it's SATA-3, cheap (for an SSD) and currently one of the fastest while being reliable.

No it will not, seriously that thing cannot run well a 10YO games, 3450 is a card that is meant to be used as a replacement for a computers that are missing integrated graphics and are going to be used for office work. It was never even meant for any gaming.

And yeah CyclopsSlayer you did not list your old components, without that we cannot really know if the upgrade is worthy now.

And yeah CyclopsSlayer you did not list your old components, without that we cannot really know if the upgrade is worthy now.

Definitely no pressing NEED to upgrade, other than the DVD which is fried, and the PSU which is overworked.

Current Components;
- MB - ASUS P7P55D-e (can run either sata 3.0 OR usb 3.0 but not both at once, and tends to be unstable if I run 1)
- CPU - Core i7 875K (really really not challenged by anything I have run)
- GPU - EVGA GTX560ti-DS SSC (factory overclock)
- SSD - Corsair 40GB ( too small for OS and single MMO/Game )
- PSU - Corsair 500W (not sure of the exact model) Modular, only has 6pin PCIe connectors
- Sound - Creative X-Fi (yes an antique with little purpose anymore)
- Optical - ASUS DVD burner that stopped working this weekend (actually the spark for the upgrade fever lol )
- Case - CoolerMaster NV 690 ( old but still good, don't need pretty as it is hidden under the work space mostly)
- Speakers - Aiwa 5.1
- Headset - Razer Megalodon
- Monitor - ViewSonic 24" 1080p (1920x1080)

Depending on the games settings chosen I would expect any gtx460ti, or AMD equivalent, or above to handle the game quite well.
There is a siege stress test I linked here a couple days ago where a gtx570 handled max settings with a minimum 24fps reported.

A 570 should come in under $300us, depends on your budget if that is reasonable.

also since I have obviously very limited computer hardware knowledge
will 4 GB of ram and an i5 processor do me good or do I have to mow lots more lawns

If you dont have problems playing Crysis2, then you wont have with AA either, since its almost the same engine, however since its an MMO more RAM is needed then in a single player game, and your 4GB wont be enough.

Well, since there is a very little real use for SataIII, and USB3.0 can be added trough external card, then I would actually be against this upgrade as a whole, it is not worth it. I do not know why do you need USB3.0 as I see no devices for it except external drives for which Esata will always be better anyway... but whatever, but the upgrade as a whole does not make much sense, you still have a quite strong CPU and the rest.



GangstaSora: Just save money, do not buy anything, don't buy shit and save it and before AA comes you will have enough money for at least lower mainstream card. When I was young I always had very powerful computer, but I also put a lot of effort in to it, I was overclocking stuff, finding always the best price vs performance after OC stuff, etc. 3450 really cannot Run Crysis 2, and by that I do not consider 800x600 lowest details 20fps as running something. If you have Core I5 CPU then the machine is very unbalanced, very weak on the GPU side. Try to save, and buy Nvidia GTS450 (be careful, only the 1GB DDR5 model) or for example Radeon 7750. You will be able to play nicely. Not on top, but it will run, as it is still going to be like 8x faster then your current card.

Yeah well don't start working too early, cause when you start you spend more and then need more. Before you know it you're 24 and working full-time at McDonalds to pay your bills.

Yes you are being stalked, it's called cookies. A lot of sites target their advertising in banner ads to those things a user has searched for recently.

Everything you do is recorded and tracked online. Your ISP, browser searches, pretty much anything you type, can all be recorded and often extracted. Famous example, a net author used to write Star Trek porno fan fiction, years later he decided to go legit as a main stream author, deleted all his stories, asked ask the sites to remove him from their author lists, and POOF! it was all gone... Sorta
To this day every one of his stories is still available on a crawler like the Wayback Machine.

Even this site is being infested by tracking marketing companies. Right now Google analytic has tried to report me and also the facebook buttons work the same. They track you even if you do not have account. Cookies are also obsolete tracking, they just serve you based on your IP, you need to fight that actively, as every person with working brain should be aware of how precious internet anonymity is and that we need to stand for it. Well... tell that to Americans.....
